The second quarter of 2024 saw the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) report 90 suspicious betting alerts, marking an 80% increase from the 50 alerts recorded in Q2 2023 but a slight decline of 3% from the 93 alerts in Q1 2024.
Regional and Sport-Specific Trends
Europe experienced a rise in suspicious alerts, with 19 cases reported compared to 4 in Q1, though still a decrease from 31 cases in Q2 2023. Poland led the EU with 6 alerts. The primary sports contributing to these alerts were esports, football, and table tennis, accounting for 84% of the total cases, with esports alone responsible for about 50%.
Insights on Esports
The significant number of alerts in esports has drawn attention to the need for heightened vigilance. The IBIA emphasized the effectiveness of customer account monitoring in detecting suspicious betting activities and protecting sporting events, consumers, and regulated betting markets.
Brazil’s Emerging Market
IBIA’s Q2 report also highlights Brazil’s potential, as it anticipates $34 billion in onshore betting turnover once the licensed market opens. To ensure the integrity of sports betting, the IBIA has urged other Latin American jurisdictions to adopt Brazil’s operator licensing framework, which mandates participation in an independent monitoring institution like the IBIA. The increase in betting alerts underscores the ongoing need for robust monitoring and cooperation among stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of sports betting across various regions and sports.
