Thailand’s Deputy Finance Minister, Julapun Amornvivat, has called state agencies to the negotiating table for talks on a casino and entertainment city project. This is a measure to help improve the economy, and Julapun stated that proper discussion needs to be accomplished prior to proceeding. The consultations are expected to be held before mid-October this year and will center on taxation and compliance with the existing legal provisions, including but not limited to the State Fiscal and Financial Disciplines Act.
They are Evergreen issues and are as follows: One is regarding the method of tax collection, which is handled by the Finance Ministry in Customs, Revenue, and Excise departments. Julapun further emphasised that such tasks cannot be delegated to another committee, which the House of Representatives recently proposed. Moreover, the proposal to establish a new fund for those people who find themselves in difficulty due to gambling has been put on hold because new funds are against the law.
Local and other international private investors are to be sought so that they may pump their resources into the project. Julapun was also positive on the possibilities of attracting other large commercial entities like Walt Disney and Universal Studios to be among this block of integrated entertainment city that will greatly boost Thailand’s economy.
